carotid artery surgery recovery time
Carotid endarterectomy Carotid endoretomy is a surgical procedure to restore blood flow through a narrow or blocked carotid artery. Carotid arteries are the blood vessels of the neck that lead blood to the brain. Over time, these arteries, like all the arteries in your body, can get sick by accumulating a fat substance called a plate, which is composed of cholesterol, calcium and other materials. Carotid endoretomy is a well-tested treatment for carotid artery disease. It has been successfully carried out for more than 50 years. It can be an important therapy to prevent a first or recurrent stroke. How does carotid endoretomy work? If diagnostic tests have revealed that it has a obstruction in a carotid artery that is best treated by surgery, it can be treated with carotid endoretomy. The procedure is performed by a vascular surgeon, a medical specialist trained in surgical procedures to treat conditions affecting blood vessels. Surgery is done through an incision in the neck. The plaque is extracted from the inner lining of the diseased artery, thus restoring blood flow through the artery to the brain. What can you expect before surgery? Members of your care team will give you instructions on what to expect on the day of surgery. Surgery is performed in the operating room of a hospital. Your vascular surgeon may choose to use general anesthesia ("put" or sleep) or local anesthesia (find only the area where the incision will be made). Using local anesthesia can allow the surgeon to talk to you during surgery and monitor blood flow to your brain. What can you expect during surgery? Surgery usually takes about 2 hours, although there will be additional preparation time before the procedure. During surgery, the surgeon will make a small incision in the neck. He or she will then fix the carotid artery to stop the blood flow or insert a tube called a shunt to create a "bypass" for the blood. The blood will continue to flow to your brain through the grid, as well as the carotid artery on the other side of the neck. The surgeon will remove the inner lining of the carotid artery at the point of obstruction. The arteries have a soft inner lining, called the endothelium, and the plate can be embedded in this coating. You may have heard the term "attenuation of the arteries", or atherosclerosis, to refer to this process. By removing a part of this coating, the surgeon may remove the blockage. Then the surgeon will remove the blanket (if one was placed) and sew the artery closed. Some patients may place a patch on incision in the artery. The patch can be made from a vein from other parts of the body or materials made by man. Finally, the surgeon will close the incision in the neck with points. What can you expect after surgery? Patients usually stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after surgery to allow recovery time and time for the doctor to monitor progress. You will be given information about what activities you may need to limit and for how long, such as driving or physical activities. Normal activity can usually be resumed a few weeks after surgery. Your attention team will notify you of warning signs that you should contact them, such as the following: Is surgery at risk? Like all surgeries, carotid endoretomy carries some risks, although serious complications are rare. The risks of surgery are generally lower than those of not being treated for carotid artery disease. Talk to your doctor about the risks. Some risks include: Long-term recovery of Carotid Endarterectomy Your recovery from carotid endarterectomy surgery will typically be short, with the discharge of the hospital that will take place within a couple of days followed by a week of home recovery. However, recovering from surgery is only the beginning of the process of preventing a future stroke, heart attack, or other forms of cardiovascular disease. The lifestyle changes and takes medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor can help slow, stop or reverse the underlying disease process that caused blockages in your carotid arteries and all arteries throughout your body. Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Carotid Endoretomy You may want to use the following questions as a tool to help you talk to your doctor about carotid endoretomy. We invite you to print them and take them with you to your next appointment. Taking notes can help you remember your argument when you get home. Learn more You may have questions about why your doctor may recommend carotide endartectomy or carotid angioplasty and stent. This decision will be individualized to the severity and location of your blockades, your medical history and your risk factors. If you are programmed to undergo carotidic endoretomy, it may be useful to know who the medical professionals will treat you along the way. Heart News More HeartSmarts for you...
